Careers in Govt.

If I were to pick a career in government to hold for the rest of my life, I would have to choose to be an FBI agent.  These agents hold positions that are no unlike those found at regular police precincts; however, FBI agents investigate cases in which federal law has been violated. Thus, FBI agents are often dealing with the most serious of criminals who have committed the most serious of crimes. In the course of investigation, agents are expected to gather intelligence regarding their suspects using surveillance, field and computer research; not unlike a local detective. Sometimes being an FBI agent involves lab work and report writing where surveillance and research are brought in to be further analyzed. Basic requirements for application include being a U.S. citizen at least 33 years of age who has at least a bachelor’s degree. Furthermore, applicants must pass a very involved written test. Perhaps the most daunting part of the application process is the series of interviews one must undergo. These are meant to check the character of applicants while testing their intellect and ability to perform as an agent investigating serious criminals.

What appeals to you about this career?

It seems like an exciting field of work. I cannot see myself becoming bored with a job that consists of going undercover to investigate drug king pins. Also, the job pays well and government jobs have great benefits.

Based on your research, would you recommend this career to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend it if my friend were interested in a job that is at times very physical and intellectually demanding. Otherwise, the job may be way too much for them. There is a lot of training involved and this job is definitely something that is more of a career than a one-time employment.

How does this career contribute to society?

This career is focused on convicting criminals and getting them off of the streets and out of general society. As an FBI agent, one is involved with bringing down serial killers, domestic terrorists, and various other menaces to society. This job contributes to society in that it is entirely based around cleaning up society.
